It is with great regret that I announce I will officially no longer be updating The Commodified.

The Commodified was as tribute to the city I live in and love, Vancouver. This blog has acted as an outlet for me to express my enthusiasm for the changes I have wanted to see in Vancouver. And in the two years I have been documenting street style here, these changes have occurred. Each day, with my eye on the street, my belief that Vancouver is world-class city worthy of note in the realms of fashion and style, has been reaffirmed. New boutiques opening all over town; local designers, stylists, and photographers getting the recognition they deserve; people on the street feeling inspired to 'get dressed' without need of a reason (and I say that in contrast to the idea of simply 'putting on clothes').

That being said, many people have come to learn that it was not the fashion of Vancouver that intrigued me most, but rather the people. We are blessed with such a wonderful community of like-minded individuals: those people who are shaping this city with positive attitude alone and calling on the world to spectate. Thank you to everyone who has sent me emails, myspace comments and facebook messages to express the inspiration you have felt from my writing or photography. You embody everything which I have mentioned above.

Although this is perhaps the end of The Commodified, this is not the end of my devotion to Vancouver. I am excited about the new projects I have on the horizon, one of which of course being my new FASHION Magazine blog, Zeitgeist!. Nor is this the end of street style in Vancouver. It is my greatest hope that a new blog will pick up where I have left off. And to whoever is passionate enough to embark on such an endeavour, I would be more than happy to pass you any advice you may be seeking.

I will continue to check my email periodically, as I am always interested in hearing from those people who have shared in my experience with The Commodified. And, I am eager to continue learning about the exciting things going on in the city. I can be reached at thecommodified@gmail.com if you would like to communicate.

We chatted a bit about the blog, and a bit about the city, but spent the majority of our time hunting down these stylish individuals. This is Thomas, a member of Vancouver's The Green Hour. I have to encourage you to check out their myspace page (linked above) because their music is actually quite good. In fact, really good. And anyone who knows me, know that I'm not nearly as passionate about Vancouver's music scene as I am about its street style. However, when I do find a local band I like, I get really excited. Which is why I can't wait for their performance tomorrow night (Saturday) at The Railway Club.

But what is even better about the Green Hour is that these are four incredibly well dressed guys, albeit they look like they walked straight out of the 1960s. I mean, when you see them all walking down the street together its a bit funny, especially out of context. But on stage, they are pretty damn cool. These are four guys who definitely understand the importance of creating an image. So much of our appreciation of music is involved in visualisation -- which is why so many musicians of the past have been as equally recognized as style icons, as they are music legends. The Green Hour give us a sense of this, as they draw inspiration in style from the same era their music refers to.

MONTREAL - Worn Journal Issue 6 Release, Slow Dance Prom

To celebrate the release of their 6th issue, Montreal's Worn Fashion Journal threw a Slow Dance Prom. And what a fitting, nostalgic idea they had to set up a photobooth. The pictures turned out beautifully! Check out their flickr album. Although I couldn't attend the event myself, it was an important event for The Commodified: a collection of photos from my archives appear on the back cover this new issue. The fashion article in this month's issue of Infamous Magazine about "5 BC Fashion Designers on the Rise" is a pretty wonderful thing. Its a collaboration between some of the most inspiring people in Vancouver, above and beyond the designers mentioned.

First, the article is written by Maeve Doyle, who is in my opinion, an important figure in Vancouver's fashion industry. Whether its her production and publicity company, her foray into journalism, or the classes she instructs at John Casablancas, she's always up to something to help inspire and promote.

Next, we have photography by Fiona Garden. Fiona Garden's photography is pretty much a staple in all Vancouver's important fashion publications. If you keep up with these magazines, then you've probably seen her work countless times and thought, "Wow. What an incredible photograph!" without even realizing it was her each time.

Vancouver is no Paris or New York, I'm willing to admit. But every now and then I come across an editorial spread and forget that for a second. Why? Because stylist Shiva Shabani has masterfully created ensembles with resources you didn't even know existed in this city. This time, she worked with Maeve's Top 5 picks to create yet another stunning collection.

i can't look at this photo and not think of a past marc by marc jacobs collection, that has been such a source of inpiration for my current aesthetic sensibilities and style. so much so that bought a pair of glasses similar to those above from a montreal thrift shop last summer. i've never been able to convince myself to leave the house wearing them, probably because i'm lacking the serious moustache that completes the ensemble. compliments to him for beating me to it, and looking way better than i ever could.

I appreciate the discussion you’ve brought up! When I took this picture I was really hesitant because I didn’t want to be perceived as exploiting the man. I took the risk, though, because I thought it was important too portray a less glamorous image of street style. Her outfit epitomizes the excesses of fashion. Whoever designed this 1980s prom dress was clearly inspired by Christian Lacroix, whose extravagant dresses parodied the materiality of 1980s wealth. So perhaps it is appropriate that the girl pictured is posing beside a downtown eastside resident?

I've since raked through some of my texts for some interesting literature on this subject. Pictured below is one of Lacrox's famous 1987 Pouf dresses:

VANCOUVER - Cordova Street / Green is the New Black

The reason I only have one picture from tonight's Gastown Christmas Shop Hop is because I instead attended a screening of the documentary, Arctic Tale, presented by Zipcar. Normally I wouldn't mention this kind of thing on the blog, but the message in the film, and given by the director during questions afterwards, really struck me. It reminded me that as a fashion-enthusiast, I have a certain responsibility to consider the impact of my materiality. Although I like to consider myself conscious of climate change, I realize I'm pretty guilty given the high turn-over rate in my closet. Yet on the same note, I'm not about to give up my interest in fashion. I can't deny that consumerism is fun!

However, there are ways that I've been trying to incorporate a more sustainable mindset into my indulgences. I avoid taking plastic shopping bags when possible. I dress weather appropriate so I don't have to boost the heat or air conditioning. I use public transit for all my shopping adventures, and every other trip I take. I'm supporting local designers, Nicole Bridger and Elroy Apparel, who are making sustainable clothing fashionable, by putting their links here. And, of course, I'm buying most of my clothes second-hand, like I'm sure many of you are too.

These little things may seem trivial, but as they say, a small effort is better than no effort. So next time you feel the need for some shopping-therapy, try to remember the new mantra journalists are heralding: green is the new black.

Last night (thursday), was an important night for two Vancouver designers. While Paperbird Clothing held an exposition at 1181, SmallTown Jeans put on a show at the Bourbon. Unfortunately, my timing was off the entire night, and I missed both collections. Luckily however, I didn't miss the crowd that stuck around for the after-events, which for SmallTown, included a performance by The Good News and DJ, my!gay!husband!.

Seattle retrospective

So I headed down to Seattle on Friday, and I'm sad to say that I came home with no street style pictures. I think my empty-handedness all day left me feeling uninspired. But I really shouldn't blame Seattle the city for my unsuccessful shopping experience. I blame Barney's. I spent far too much time snivelling over the beautiful Dior Homme, Raf Simons, Jil Sander items I can't even dream of affording. What I needed was a good slap in the face and the hook of a cane around my neck, yanking me into Target (or Targé, as we call it here in Canada). I didn't even go to the outlet malls on the way home, which usually accounts for one unnecessary but gratifying impulse buy. So I'll just have to try my luck another time.

But in all honesty, the overall taste the short 7 hours I spent in the Emerald city left me can be summed up as "posh/punk", referring to Downtown/Capitol Hill respectively. I really just don't know the city well enough to hunt for street style, because I'm too busy hunting for Olive street, the only connection i know between the two neighbourhoods.

VANCOUVER - H&M Season Start Kick-off Party

H&M is preparing for its winter season, with some new collection pieces being launched November 8. This includes Roberto Cavalli for H&M, which will be available for men and women at the Coquitlam store. I'm not sure if it's worth making a trip out to the burbs, as they say it will all sell out by noon, especially because we'll be attracting the seattle crowd as well. In my opinion, you are probably better off just waiting for it to show up on ebay and hour later. But speaking of seattle, I'll be heading down there for the day tomorrow, and will hopefully be capturing a few south of the border street styles.

While I'm at it, i just want to express my love for watching promotional videos for new clothing lines on youtube. Here is another one of my recent favourites:

If these pictures look at all like they were taken in someone's living room, it's because the Ion Magazine BC Fashion Week wrap party took place at Moe's Home Furnishings (Terminal Ave). What a great idea... each show room became a themed lounge!

VANCOUVER - Jason Matlo S/S 08, The Modern

Vancouver's own Jason Matlo brought home his collection after presenting in NY this season. Matlo's designs are evolving every season and are becoming increasingly exciting as a result. Yet he maintains a classic sophistication, which, in my mind, makes his pieces appealing to both young and old.

Sorry the pictures are so grainy. It was super dark and smokey in the venue (The Modern), so I had to do a bit of work in photoshop to bring out the colours.

EVENTS - Miss Sixty Store Opening

If you had asked me in May or June my opinions on Miss Sixty, I wouldn't have known what to tell you. I've since met an incredibly awesome person who calls Miss Sixty one her favourite brands and it opened my eyes to the great potential of their clothing. I mean, some of the bold prints are a bit much, but the cut and glitz of their collection is kinda exciting.

What does it mean now that a store is opening in Vancouver? Frankly, I think its great to see that these companies are recognizing that Vancouver is a market that ought to be tapped. Finally the world is seeing us as a fashion-conscious, even fashion-oriented city. At least now their will an alternative to Bebe when shopping for evening attire, and the average Vancouverite will look like they walked out of a photoshoot, rather than a yoga studio for once.

As for Miss Sixty's male counterpart, Energie, I have much the same to say. Although I find their advertisements incredibly appealing, its not a shop I would necessarily go to. However, if it brings a bit of variety to the standard faded-jeans-and-button-down male wardrobe, then I'm all for it! Actually, after giving their most recent collection a second look, I have to admit, the company is doing a good job of slowly pushing actual-men's fashion in a direction I think it should be going.

The location will be at 970 Robson Street. I think the Grand Opening advertised above is invite-only, but the store will likely be open to the general public on Friday, October 12.

Well, it doesn't really get any more 'street' than a block party. Livestock threw one on Abbott Street this afternoon, complimented with food by Guu, the music of various local DJ's, beer garden at JD's BarberShop, and a halfpipe overcrowded by skaters.

Today I met Wendy, the owner of Dream, on her way to work. For over a decade, Dream has been carrying almost an entire inventory of locally designed pieces at its 311 West Cordova Street location. After meeting her, I cracked open my new book, Robert Greene's The Art of Seduction, and stumbled upon the following, appropriate passage:

August marks the one year anniversary for The Commodified! Some kind of celebration for this milestone will hopefully be underway within the next month.

Exclusive photos provided by The Commodified appeared in the August issue of Modette Magazine (Sweden). Only six were published, but all ten should be available soon enough by clicking the above link.

The Commodified was to be in competition against Odessa on StreetClash this week. For some unknown reason Odessa dropped out, so Vancouver has moved on to the next round by acclamation alone! Hoorah!

For some time now, I've also been wanting to announce that Aryana Sye would be joining the team as a contributing photographer. I quite randomly bumped into her on Robson Street today, and am pleased to introduce her now by picturing her here, looking chic as ever:
